Seoul clarifies position after Trump criticizes Middle East support

07 April 2026 13:16

South Korea has taken note of remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting that Seoul is not doing enough to support American efforts in the ongoing conflict with Iran, a South Korean foreign ministry official said, Yonhap reports.

Trump has criticized South Korea, Japan, and European allies for not assisting the US in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including proposals to send warships to escort commercial vessels amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

“We have been paying close attention to President Trump’s repeated remarks,” foreign ministry spokesperson Park Il said during a press briefing.

“The government will carefully review the matter and make a judgment in close coordination with the United States,” he added.

Seoul reportedly reached out to Washington to clarify Trump’s statements and was informed that the remarks were not aimed specifically at South Korea. Rather, they reflected broader dissatisfaction with US allies for not responding to calls for assistance.

Sources familiar with the discussions said both sides agree that Trump’s comments are unlikely to affect the bilateral alliance, including ongoing efforts to implement trade and security commitments established under previous joint summit agreements.
