Seoul-Tehran dialogue underway following vessel incident in Strait of Hormuz
Seoul and Tehran are continuing close and serious consultations over a recent incident involving a South Korean-operated vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry said it would take “necessary measures” after the investigation is completed, Yonhap reports.
According to a previously conducted government investigation, the vessel HMM Namu was damaged by two unidentified aerial objects, which caused an explosion and fire on board. Analysis of debris is currently ongoing to determine the nature of the objects and possible responsibility.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il said at a briefing that Seoul is “holding very close and serious discussions” with the Iranian side and will continue diplomatic contacts if necessary.
“If additional findings are available, we will continue necessary communication and take appropriate measures, including providing explanations to the Iranian side," the spokesperson stated.
He stressed that the priority is ensuring the safety and freedom of navigation in the region, and that active diplomatic efforts are being pursued in this regard.
US President Donald Trump previously claimed Iranian involvement in the strikes, but Iran’s embassy in Seoul categorically rejected the allegations. Tehran has not issued further statements following Seoul’s preliminary findings.
According to sources, dozens of South Korean-operated vessels remain blocked in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing regional tensions.
