Serbia criticizes EU’s "hypocrisy" on Russian gas purchases
Serbia is set to sign a new gas supply agreement with Russia soon, according to Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin.
He emphasized that the deal will be made on the best possible terms, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Speaking at the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum, Vulin expressed confidence about the new agreement, saying, "Yes, we will sign a new agreement very soon and we have wonderful conditions, the best possible conditions."
He added that the deal would contribute to Serbia's continued economic growth, fueled by cheap energy resources from Russia.
Vulin also criticized Europe's stance on Russian gas, calling it "hypocrisy" that while Europe continues to purchase Russian gas, it expects Serbia to cease its own dealings with Russia.
Earlier, Nenad Popovic, Serbia’s Minister for International Economic Cooperation, announced that Serbia is expected to sign a new agreement with Russia in the spring of 2025, on the same terms as the previous deal.
However, Serbia’s position on Russian sanctions has created tension with the European Union. EU member states have not opened the second stage of negotiations for Serbia's accession to the EU due to the country's non-compliance with EU foreign policy, specifically its refusal to impose sanctions on Russia.
The European Union also cited issues related to the rule of law and relations with Kosovo. Seven EU countries, including Croatia and the Netherlands, opposed the continuation of talks, though discussions will resume next week.
The second phase of negotiations is expected to take place between December 16 and 20, but time is running out for its completion.
