Serbia to host World Environment Day after Azerbaijan, minister says
Serbia will host World Environment Day (WED) in 2026 after Azerbaijan, Rashad Ismayilov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, has stated.
He announced the decision during a WED session held in Baku, organised in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5, since its establishment in 1973.
The day was created by a United Nations General Assembly resolution following the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Each year, one country serves as the main host of global commemorative events.
Over the years, this role has been held by countries including India, China, Colombia, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.
In 2026, Azerbaijan has been selected as the host country for the global events.
