Shark sighting prompts evacuation of Tel Aviv beach

11 October 2025 14:48

On the morning of October 11, a shark was spotted near one of Tel Aviv’s beaches, prompting the urgent evacuation of all swimmers and beachgoers from the water.

According to Caliber.Az, citing Israeli media, the authorities immediately took precautionary measures following the sighting to ensure public safety.

Reports indicate that similar incidents have recently occurred in several coastal cities across Israel.

Preliminary information suggests that the shark seen near Tel Aviv may have been a tiger shark, which had also been sighted earlier off the coasts of Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Bat Yam. As a result, beaches in these areas were temporarily closed to visitors for safety reasons.

At the same time, Israel’s Nature and Parks Department previously clarified that the whale shark — another species occasionally sighted off the Israeli coast — poses no threat to humans, as it feeds exclusively on plankton, small fish, and crustaceans.

The whale shark, which can reach lengths of 12 to 14 meters, is considered an endangered species.
