Shock as man waits calmly in Mumbai hospital with machete in head VIDEO

09 May 2026 13:32

A young man in Mumbai, India, was filmed appearing unusually calm while waiting in a hospital with a machete lodged in his head, drawing shock from bystanders who watched him casually use his phone despite the severity of his injury.

Authorities said the man was brought to the casualty department of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in the early hours of Saturday, May 2. He had allegedly been attacked with a billhook-style machete known locally as a koita, a tool commonly used for tasks such as opening coconuts, clearing vegetation, or cutting wood, as per a report by Need to Know.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the patient was conscious, alert, and showed no neurological deficit at the time of admission. Identified in reports only as Isma, he was later transferred to the trauma intensive care unit for further evaluation.

Medical scans revealed that the blade had penetrated the left side of his skull and extended nearly 1.5 inches into his brain. A neurosurgical team led by Dr. Batuk Diora performed an emergency operation under anaesthetic and successfully removed the weapon.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 4, the BMC confirmed the outcome of the procedure: “The operation was successful, and the patient is currently conscious and undergoing treatment in the trauma ICU.

“His condition is stable and showing signs of steady improvement.”

Koitas typically measure between three and six feet in length, according to reports by Need To Know. While they are widely used as agricultural and utility tools, they are also frequently depicted in South Indian films, where characters conceal them and reveal them dramatically during fight scenes.

In Maharashtra state, koita gangs are known to have a notorious reputation. As of the latest updates, local media have not reported any arrests in connection with the alleged attack.
