Six killed in explosion and building collapse in Athens

Six people have been killed in a gas explosion followed by the collapse of a building in Athens, Greek newspaper Kathimerini reports.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning in Plaka, a popular tourist district in the Greek capital. Three people — a passer-by and two women living in a neighbouring building — were injured.

The newspaper reported that the bodies of the last two people reported missing were found on Saturday afternoon, bringing the death toll to six.

According to Kathimerini, an elderly couple lived in the building. The man was British, and his wife was also living there. Four American tourists had rented an apartment in the building.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been established. A gas leak is among the possible explanations, according to the newspaper.
