Slovak PM criticises EU, calls for top diplomat’s resignation
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that the European Union is experiencing a deep crisis and is unable to make effective decisions.
Speaking in an interview published on his Facebook page, Fico argued that the EU’s only notable strength was its hostility toward Russia, while its competitiveness was declining and internal agreement on key issues, including joint defence, was lacking, Caliber.Az reports.
Fico said that with the arrival of President Donald Trump, EU representatives had become even more helpless, and member states appeared to rely excessively on the United States for direction.
Despite his criticisms, Fico assured that Slovakia would remain committed to the EU and emphasized that a “strong Slovakia” would continue to advocate for the union, with no plans to leave.
In the same interview, Fico called for the resignation of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, stating that Europe needed stronger leadership at both the national and EU levels. He noted that he was speaking openly about this for the first time, acknowledging that his comments might draw criticism.
Fico criticised the EU’s inability to respond quickly to international crises, citing a 20-hour delay in issuing a statement on recent events in Venezuela following the capture of Nicolas Maduro by the United States.
He argued that the union lacked its own international positions and called for leadership that could act decisively rather than simply following the United States.
