Slovak PM Fico talks USAID closure with Elon Musk, citing foreign interference
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has revealed that he discussed with Elon Musk, head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the potential closure of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
Fico cited concerns over US involvement in funding interference in the affairs of other nations, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
In a video message shared on his Facebook page, Fico explained: “We discussed the closure of USAID, the American agency which had allocated significant financial resources to non-governmental organizations and media in Slovakia.
These funds were later used by anti-government media and organizations to conduct anti-government activities... Musk assured us that this era is over, as the new US administration is not interested in funding interference in the internal affairs of other countries.”
Fico, who is currently in the US for a conservative forum, had previously requested information from Musk regarding USAID-funded projects in Slovakia that may have been used for political purposes. He expressed his willingness to meet Musk in person to address concerns about foreign funds potentially being used to discriminate against a certain segment of Slovakia’s political spectrum.
On February 2, Musk labelled USAID a “criminal organization” and called for its closure, adding that US President Donald Trump supports this initiative. Musk also confirmed that the process to dismantle the agency is already underway.
