Slovak PM says he saw little interest from Zelenskyy in ending Ukraine war

19 December 2025 17:58

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he did not perceive strong interest from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in ending the war during discussions at a recent European Union summit in Brussels.

Fico stated that while Zelenskyy spoke about certain aspects of potential peace negotiations, he remained unconvinced that the Ukrainian leader was focused on bringing the war to an end. He added that he hoped Zelenskyy would not take offense at this assessment, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

The Slovak prime minister also argued that Ukraine has no realistic chance of defeating Russia militarily. In his view, Kyiv is unable to reverse the course of the fighting, while Western countries have an interest in the conflict continuing.

Speaking on Slovakia’s public broadcaster STVR, Fico further claimed that Ukraine is facing serious manpower problems, asserting that many young people are unwilling to join the armed forces and that special units are being used to recruit men in public places such as restaurants.
