Slovak president backs EU demand for Ukraine to resume gas transit

06 March 2025 13:42

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has backed the Slovak authorities' call for the European Union (EU) to include in the final document of its upcoming summit a demand for Ukraine to resume gas transit through its territory.

Pellegrini made his comments during a press conference in the Czech town of Slavkov after trilateral negotiations between Bratislava, Prague, and Vienna had concluded, Caliber.Az reports referring to international media.

The Slovak president expressed his understanding of why Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico suggested that EU member states demand Ukraine restore gas transit. He explained that the request concerns the potential for fuel supplies from Azerbaijan or other countries willing to strike a deal for gas transit through Ukraine.

"I consider it a legitimate manifestation of the protection of Slovakia's national interests," Pellegrini said, affirming the importance of securing energy supplies for Slovakia and ensuring its economic stability.

Pellegrini also noted that Ukraine could demonstrate its gratitude for European assistance by resuming gas transit. "Prime Minister Fico cannot go to these negotiations, agree to everything, and then watch the Slovak economy be destroyed," he stated, emphasizing the negative economic impact on Slovakia if the gas transit issue is not addressed.

The extraordinary EU summit, scheduled for March 6 in Brussels, is expected to focus on a range of pressing issues, including the approval of the “Re-arm Europe” program. This initiative aims to increase the military potential of EU member states, reducing dependence on the US for security. As part of the program, €800 billion is earmarked for strengthening European defence capabilities.
