Slovakia welcomes Russian president’s proposal for peace talks on Ukraine
Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanar, has expressed a positive response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion that peace talks on the Ukraine conflict could be held in Slovakia.
In a statement to the media, Blanar, emphasized his country’s consistent stance in favor of peaceful solutions to the ongoing war, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
"Slovakia has always supported initiatives aimed at resolving the Ukrainian conflict through dialogue. In this context, we view the Russian president’s statement, in which he acknowledged the possibility of holding part of the peace talks in Slovakia, as a promising signal for an early end to the war, the bloodshed, and the destruction it has caused," Blanar said.
The Slovak government has long advocated for diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region, and the foreign minister’s remarks underline the country’s commitment to supporting any initiative that could lead to a peaceful resolution.
The minister highlighted Slovakia's ongoing efforts to secure an early ceasefire and initiate negotiations for lasting peace in Ukraine. "That is why I participated in the peace summit in Switzerland earlier this year. All participants at the summit endorsed the initiatives promoted by our government. They agreed that future peace talks should involve all parties, including Russia," Blanar stated.
Additionally, the foreign minister shared on his Facebook page that the Ukrainian side is aware of Slovakia’s proposal. "We also informed our Ukrainian partners about this possibility of holding talks in Slovakia during the joint meeting of the Slovak and Ukrainian governments in early October 2024 in Uzhgorod," he wrote.
