Slovenian president suffers broken collarbone in motorcade accident

05 August 2026 13:11

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar has revealed that she suffered a broken collarbone in a traffic accident last week, acknowledging that she was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

Speaking to Radio and Television Slovenia, Pirc Musar accepted responsibility for the oversight, calling it her "biggest mistake."

"That was my biggest mistake, and I sincerely regret it. I was not wearing a seat belt and fully accept responsibility. The price I paid was a broken collarbone," she said.

The accident occurred on July 31 as the president was returning from vacation. According to Pirc Musar, she was seated in the back of the vehicle and did not witness everything that happened inside the Kastelec Tunnel, where two vehicles in her motorcade collided.

"First, there was a collision with another vehicle, and then we were thrown into the tunnel wall. It was probably at that moment that all the injuries occurred," she said.

Following the crash, the president was taken to a hospital in the coastal town of Izola, where she underwent medical examinations. She said surgery was not required and that she is "feeling fine," although doctors expect her recovery and rehabilitation to take between four and six weeks.

The collision injured two people, including the president. No details have been released about the condition of the other injured person, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
