SOCAR plans to establish zero-emission zones in Karabakh, East Zangezur
The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is set to develop the economic regions of Karabakh and East Zangezur as zero-emission zones.
This initiative was detailed in SOCAR’s 2023 Sustainability Report, Caliber.Az reports.
To achieve this goal, SOCAR plans to implement measures aimed at reducing emissions, which will include enhancing energy efficiency and creating infrastructure for electric vehicles.
The company is committed to transitioning from gas to renewable energy sources, increasing the production of green fuels, and replacing traditional hydrocarbon fuels with biogas and biodiesel.
This ambitious plan underscores SOCAR's dedication to fostering sustainable development in these regions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental responsibility.
Notably, Azerbaijan, a nation rich in renewable energy potential, stands as a prominent example of a successful transition to alternative energy sources. While modern Azerbaijan’s development is closely tied to its oil production, the country has emerged as a regional leader in adopting innovative strategies aimed at transitioning to green energy.
Furthermore, Azerbaijan is making significant contributions to addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
The government's commitment to climate action and its drive towards a green economy, coupled with Azerbaijan's recognised international stature, have naturally led to the decision to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku.
This prestigious conference provides Azerbaijan with an opportunity to showcase its technological advancements in energy transition to a global audience.
In line with these efforts, 2024 has been declared the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” in the Republic of Azerbaijan, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to sustainable development and collective action against climate change.
