Somalia cancels all agreements with UAE, citing sovereignty concerns

13 January 2026 11:05

The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia has announced the annulment of all agreements concluded with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including those related to security, defence, and port operations, citing concerns over national sovereignty, unity, and constitutional order.

In a decision issued on January 12, the cabinet said the move followed a comprehensive review of recent developments and applies to all agreements involving federal institutions, affiliated entities, and Somalia’s federal member states, Caliber.Az reports per Somali media

The cancellation covers partnerships linked to the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, as well as all bilateral security and defense cooperation agreements between Mogadishu and Abu Dhabi.

According to the government, the decision was based on official reports and what it described as strong evidence of hostile actions that undermine Somalia’s independence, territorial integrity, and political sovereignty.

The cabinet said such actions contravene the principles of sovereignty and non-interference enshrined in international and regional frameworks, including the charters of the United Nations, African Union, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Arab League.

The Council of Ministers instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally notify the UAE of the decision and to oversee its implementation. The ministry was also directed to brief international and regional partners, including the African Union and the United Nations.

Somalia reaffirmed its full sovereign authority over its territory, ports, security affairs, and foreign relations, while emphasising that it remains open to international cooperation based on mutual respect, recognition of Somalia’s unity, and adherence to constitutional and international norms. The cabinet said the decision was taken in the public interest of the Somali state.
