Some 18 migrants killed in attempt to storm Morocco-Spain border

Some 18 migrants were killed when they tried to break through the Morocco-Spain border.

AFP news agency reports citing information from Moroccan authorities that 140 law enforcers and 76 migrants were injured.

About 2,000 migrants the day before, on June 24, approached the border with the Spanish enclave of Melilla. About 500 people have attempted to break into Spanish territory. According to media reports, they were armed with sticks and hooks and used them against law enforcement officials.

In 2021, 42,000 illegal migrants entered Spain, most of them by sea.

Some 1,900 crossed the border near the Spanish enclaves of North Africa, Melilla, and Ceuta.
