South Korea detains Americans sending rice, cash in bottles to North Korea
Six American nationals have been detained by South Korean authorities on Ganghwado Island, near the border with North Korea, after they tried to send around 1,300 plastic bottles containing rice, one-dollar bills, and religious materials into North Korean territory.
The group is believed to have intended to float the bottles downstream so they could reach North Korean shores, a method that is highly sensitive and frowned upon by Pyongyang, Caliber.Az reports via Korean newspaper.
South Korean officials confirmed that the detainees violated public safety laws, as the area where the incident occurred is designated a restricted and dangerous zone. Military personnel initially intercepted the group before transferring them to police custody. An official investigation is ongoing, and interpreters will be brought in to assist with questioning.
