South Korea fires warning shots at North Korean ship near maritime border
26 September 2025 09:36
South Korea’s military fired warning shots on September 26 after a North Korean merchant ship briefly crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
The incursion occurred around 5 a.m. local time near Baengnyeong Island, a South Korean border island close to the disputed maritime boundary. The NLL serves as the de facto sea border between the two countries, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
According to the JCS, the South Korean military issued warning broadcasts before firing warning shots to drive the vessel back.
The North Korean ship quickly retreated into northern waters following the response.
