South Korea may amend Constitution to resolve political crisis
Floor leader of the South Korean ruling People Power Party Kweon Seong-dong has highlighted the need for a constitutional amendment, primarily aimed at decentralising presidential and parliamentary powers.
He called for a supplementary budget to stimulate the economy, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
"I am convinced that constitutional reform is the fundamental solution to the ongoing political crisis," Rep. Kweon Seong-dong stated in his speech to parliament. "It is time we consider a system that both decentralizes the excessive power of an imperial president and limits the power of an imperial parliament."
Kweon also advocated for electoral reforms, including the restructuring of electoral districts, even if it means "shortening our own terms."
Regarding the supplementary budget, Kweon emphasised that the budget cuts made unilaterally by the Democratic Party (DP) must be "reversed and supplemented."
"I do not oppose discussions on the extra budget, but a clear set of principles and direction is necessary," he added.
He further noted that the supplementary budget should prioritise economic growth, support for vulnerable groups, and enhancing trade competitiveness, particularly in the artificial intelligence sector, rather than focusing on increasing the issuance of local currency vouchers, as the DP has proposed in line with the policy of its leader Lee Jae-myung.
