Macron’s party eyes rebrand as key figures break away

05 August 2025 10:45

France's ruling party may soon undergo a significant transformation as senior figures seek to distance the movement from President Emmanuel Macron.

Gabriel Attal, the former Prime Minister and current Secretary-General of Macron’s Renaissance party, has initiated internal discussions about renaming the political movement, Caliber.Az reports, citing French media.

Attal has circulated a letter to party members, inviting them to share their views on the party’s future direction and potential rebranding.

Sources suggest Attal believes the Renaissance brand lacks the strength needed for the future and is looking to reform the party according to his own vision — one that moves gradually away from Macron’s influence. The President’s mandate ends in 2027, and under current rules, he is not eligible to run for a third term.

Tensions within the party are becoming increasingly apparent. In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin openly acknowledged a growing divergence between the party’s stance and his personal beliefs.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister and current Education Minister Élisabeth Borne is also seen to be distancing herself, shifting her focus to her own political initiative, Bâtir ensemble (“Building Together”), according to Le Figaro.

Macron’s party was originally launched in 2016 as En Marche! (“On the Move”), later rebranded as La République en Marche (“The Republic on the Move”) before adopting its current name, Renaissance, in 2022.
