South Korean, US, Japanese FMs to raise North Korea’s nuclear program at UN session
The South Korean Foreign Ministry has stated that the country’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun will hold a trilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to discuss key pressing issues, including North Korea’s nuclear program.
The Ministry announced that the meeting will take place later today, September 22, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, Caliber.Az reports per the Seoul-based news agency.
During the upcoming meeting, the diplomats are expected to emphasise the three-way partnership and coordinate on key regional and global issues.
The upcoming discussions may also cover maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, China’s growing assertiveness in the region, and practical cooperation in emerging technologies, such as critical minerals, supply chain stability, and artificial intelligence.
Vice Foreign Minister Park Yong-ju represented South Korea at the previous trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers in July in Malaysia on the sidelines of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events, while parliament was still finalising Cho Hyun's candidacy.
The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) is currently underway in New York, with the high-level General Debate scheduled from September 23 to 29, 2025. This session marks a significant milestone in the UN's history, emphasising the theme: “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.”
