Spain pledges unwavering support for Ukraine as FM Albares arrives in Kyiv
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has arrived in Kyiv for an official visit, reaffirming Spain's support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
"We must make this year a year of peace. A just peace, guaranteeing the sovereignty and freedom of Ukrainians. Spain stands with them in this," minister said on X, Caliber.Az reports.
Albares also remarked that the world is undergoing changes of a magnitude only comparable to the fall of the Berlin Wall. He identified the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East as two of the most pressing challenges facing the transatlantic alliance.
Earlier this month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez revealed that Spain has increased its defence spending by 70% over the past decade.
He highlighted that Spain now leads NATO in the proportion of defence spending allocated to operations, contributing nearly ten times more than the NATO average. Sánchez also emphasized that Madrid provided military aid to Kyiv amounting to €1 billion in 2024.
Meantime, Spain has expressed its determination to strengthen unity within the European Union, particularly in response to challenges posed by former US President Donald Trump.
