Spain reaffirms strong commitment to NATO, rejects criticism of Alliance role
Spain’s Defence Minister Margarita Robles has described her country as a “responsible, serious and reliable ally” committed to NATO, stressing that the alliance would not be able to carry out its key tasks without Spain’s participation.
In a video message published on the ministry’s official X account, Robles stated that Spain remains firmly dedicated to its role within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which she said is essential for collective security.
“Spain is a responsible, serious and reliable ally, committed to NATO. This is an organisation that could not carry out such important work without Spain,” she said.
Robles added that Spanish armed forces are actively contributing to NATO’s eastern flank, operating across land, sea and air domains. “No one will lecture us on our commitment to peace, our pride as a nation, and our membership in NATO,” she emphasised.
The comments come after Reuters, citing a source, reported that Pentagon officials had discussed potential measures against NATO allies over alleged reluctance to support the United States in a possible conflict with Iran. Among the options reportedly considered was the suspension of Spain from the alliance of NATO.
