Spanish FM responds to Trump’s tariff threats: “Spain is a reliable NATO ally”
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of new tariffs against Spain over its low defence spending.
According to 20minutos, Albares stated that “Spain is a reliable ally” within NATO and that its commitment to Euro-Atlantic security cannot be called into question.
“There is no doubt about Spain’s contribution to Euro-Atlantic security,” the minister said.
He reminded that Spain has about 3,000 military personnel deployed to help ensure security on NATO’s eastern flank — a presence that is “fundamental for the safety of the skies over the Baltic states.”
Albares added that Spain remains a “reliable NATO ally” and upholds its commitment to the 2% defence spending target set at the 2014 NATO summit in Wales.
