Spanish FM rules out immediate mediation in Iran conflict
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said on April 6 that Spain currently sees no prospects for playing a mediating role in negotiations over Iran.
Speaking in an interview with TVE, Albares noted that all signs point to a continuation of the conflict on all fronts, Caliber.Az reports.
“What I do not see is a real opportunity to establish mediation to return to the negotiating table. For that, we need to simultaneously involve the United States and Iran; without clear participation from both sides, it will be very difficult to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and achieve a de-escalation of this war,” he said.
The foreign minister emphasised that the current conflict has reached such a scale that its economic consequences are being felt worldwide.
“This war cannot end simply with a pause between two wars or a global arms race,” Albares added.
He also confirmed that, at present, neither side is discussing the withdrawal of US troops from bases in Spain.
