Spanish intelligence officer who leaked US data found expert on Russia
Spanish intelligence officer who is suspected of passing secret data to employees of the US Embassy, dealt with issues related to the Russian Federation.
According to El Confidencial, a specialist from Spain's national intelligence center was part of the team of the first suspect in the leak of classified information. His status as an expert on Russia allegedly made him a particularly valuable person for recruitment by the United States. It is noted that the intelligence officer provided the US with information from other areas. In this case, he worked for his country for more than 20 years.
The accused of espionage faces up to 12 years in prison for treason.
Earlier, on December 7, El Pais newspaper highlighted the espionage scandal. According to the newspaper, Spain has discreetly expelled at least two US Embassy staff accused of bribing Spanish intelligence officers for secrets. Two Spanish agents were suspected of leaking information. One of them, a mid-ranking officer, was allegedly recruited after being promised a large sum of money.
