Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings past $500 million in record first week
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, has set another box-office record, becoming the fastest film to surpass $500 million in North America.
Sony Pictures said on August 6 that the film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, earned more than $500 million domestically in its first seven days. It surpassed Avengers: Endgame, which reached the milestone in eight days following its April 2019 release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The latest achievement adds to a string of records for Brand New Day, which has posted the biggest domestic box-office totals ever recorded for both a Monday and a Tuesday.
The film also became the second-fastest movie to cross $1 billion at the global box office. Sony announced on August 4 that it reached the milestone in six days, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.
Over its opening weekend, Brand New Day was locked in a close race with Endgame for the biggest domestic opening in history. Sony confirmed on Monday that the new Spider-Man film won the race with $360 million, surpassing Endgame’s $357.1 million domestic opening.
However, Endgame continues to hold the record for the biggest worldwide opening weekend, with $1.2 billion.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also set records for the biggest Thursday preview earnings and highest domestic Friday total, while giving Sony its biggest-ever opening weekend.
Produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, the film has a reported production budget of $225 million.
