Spokesperson: China urges Iran, US to sustain momentum in talks

22 June 2026 12:21

China hopes Iran and the United States will preserve the momentum of their negotiations and continue working together to secure further progress in the dialogue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on June 22.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Guo said China supports mediation efforts undertaken by Pakistan, Qatar and other parties when asked to comment on the Iran-U.S. talks taking place in Switzerland, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said “progress” had been made after the first day of talks between senior U.S. and Iranian officials in Switzerland, despite a tense start marked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to resume attacks.

A joint statement issued by mediators Pakistan and Qatar said the United States and Iran had agreed on a roadmap toward a final agreement within 60 days. Technical-level discussions will continue throughout the week, with the conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon a key focus.

“Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon war,” Araghchi said after the talks concluded early on Sunday (June 21).

According to the joint statement, Washington and Tehran agreed to establish a “communication line” to prevent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and create a “de-confliction cell” with Lebanon’s government to ensure the “adherence of the termination of military operations in Lebanon”.
