Starlink offers free connectivity kits to flood-hit Texas residents

Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink has stepped in to assist flood-stricken communities in Texas by providing free communications kits and one month of complimentary service, the company announced via social media on July 6.

The emergency support initiative is aimed at bolstering search and rescue efforts and reconnecting isolated residents in remote or heavily damaged areas where traditional communication lines have been disrupted.

“Starlink is providing Mini kits for search and rescue efforts – ensuring connectivity even in dead zones – and one month of free service,” the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

In addition to the satellite kits, customers of T-Mobile — which has partnered with SpaceX — can now send text messages via Starlink’s satellite network. This service is designed to ensure uninterrupted basic communication capabilities during crises.

“Additionally, anyone in the impacted areas with a compatible smartphone will be able to receive emergency alerts from public safety authorities,” the company said, highlighting the role of SpaceX satellites in delivering those messages.

On July 4, central Texas was struck by catastrophic flash flooding after torrential pre-dawn rains caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet within 45 minutes, overwhelming communities and a riverside summer camp. The disaster has resulted in at least 82 confirmed deaths, with dozens still missing—many of them children. Kerr County has been hardest hit, reporting 68 fatalities, including 28 children.

Search and rescue operations, involving over 400 personnel, continue as weather conditions hamper efforts. With more rain forecasted and federal support now mobilised, including an emergency declaration signed by President Donald Trump, the state remains in a race against time to locate the missing and aid survivors.
