Stranded whale in Germany frees itself after days in shallow waters
A humpback whale that had been stranded in shallow waters of the Baltic Sea in northern Germany has managed to free itself and return to open water, according to SRF.
The animal had been stuck for several days, prompting a rescue operation that lasted from Monday, March 23. During that time, teams worked to create a channel through the sandbank in an effort to guide the whale back to deeper waters. The operation was paused overnight.
However, according to biologist Robert Marc Lehmann, who was involved in the effort, the whale ultimately escaped on its own without human assistance.
By Friday morning, journalists who arrived at the site confirmed that the whale was no longer there, indicating it had successfully made its way back into open waters.
