Student opens fire in Ukrainian school, injuring classmate Photo
A student opened fire inside a school in western Ukraine, injuring a classmate during a lesson, police said.
According to the National Police, the incident occurred at a school in the Uzhhorod district on April 16 at around 9:30 a.m. local time, when emergency services received a call reporting a threat to school staff, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
Authorities said a ninth-grade student suddenly produced a firearm during class and fired two shots, one of which struck another student.
The suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting but was later detained by patrol police.
The injured student received medical treatment, and officials said the victim’s condition is not life-threatening.
Police stated that the weapon, preliminarily identified as a non-lethal firearm, has been seized. Investigators are now working to determine how the student obtained the weapon and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Authorities have not yet classified the case legally, and the investigation is ongoing.
