Sun records highest number of solar flares in two years

The Sun recorded its highest number of solar flares in two years on July 5, according to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of Russia's Space Research Institute.

Scientists said 24 C-class or stronger flares were recorded over the day in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and 26 in Moscow time—the highest daily total in the past two years, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Researchers stressed that the heightened solar activity is of scientific interest only and poses no threat.

The same day also marked the end of a geomagnetic storm that was the second strongest of 2026.

Solar wind parameters have since returned to normal levels.
