Suspected IRGC member planning terror attack arrested in Cyprus
Cypriot police have announced the arrest of a suspect on charges related to terrorism and espionage. No additional details have been provided regarding the circumstances of the case or the specific charges.
Preliminary information suggests that the detainee is a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Local authorities reportedly received "secret and highly credible information" indicating that the suspect was planning to carry out a terrorist attack "in the near future", Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
The arrest comes amid heightened security measures in Cyprus. Thousands of Israeli nationals are currently on the island awaiting repatriation. Security has been tightened at locations frequented by Israeli tourists, including hotels, synagogues, and Chabad centres, with increased foot and vehicle patrols.
To prevent potential terrorist attacks, security has also been reinforced at Larnaca and Paphos airports — cities where the majority of Israeli visitors are currently located. It is also noted that Israeli airline aircraft have been relocated to Cyprus.
