Suspicious package sent to Israeli president in London, under investigation
A suspicious package addressed to Israeli President Isaac Herzog was delivered during his official visit to London this week and is currently under investigation, his office confirmed in a statement.
“During the visit, a suspicious package addressed to the president was received. Local and Israeli security forces are now handling the suspicious object,” the statement read, offering no further details about the contents or the circumstances of its delivery, Caliber.Az reports, citing Israeli media.
Israeli security officials have expressed concern in recent weeks that Iranian elements—potentially in coordination with Hamas—may attempt to target official Israeli assets abroad. These concerns have intensified following the war with Iran in June.
In response, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) has reportedly deployed what it described as “unique technological capabilities” to bolster security at Israeli diplomatic missions and institutions worldwide. Some of these measures are reportedly being used overseas for the first time and involve both overt and covert reinforcements in coordination with local authorities.
President Herzog’s visit to the United Kingdom included a previously unannounced meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on September 10. The meeting, held at the invitation of the UK’s Jewish community, came amid growing diplomatic tensions over Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas and a recent Israeli strike on terrorist operatives in Qatar.
Speaking after the meeting at Chatham House, a leading London-based think tank, Herzog acknowledged the exchange with Starmer was marked by significant disagreement.
“It was a meeting between allies, but it was a tough meeting,” Herzog told attendees.
