Sweden considers supplying Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine amid ongoing discussions

29 March 2024 16:36

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson has revealed that Sweden is actively considering the possibility of supplying Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

Speaking on the matter, Jonson emphasized that discussions are currently underway within the framework of the aviation coalition, according to RBC-Ukraine.

"The deliberations are ongoing, and they take place within the fighter jet coalition," stated the Swedish Defense Minister.

Sweden's involvement in assisting Ukraine extends beyond mere deliberations. Stockholm is part of an initiative alongside allied countries, aimed at facilitating Ukraine's acquisition of American-made F-16 fighter jets, along with providing necessary pilot training.

Jonson reiterated Europe's responsibility to bolster assistance to Ukraine, particularly in light of recent developments. He underscored positive strides in Sweden's defence industry and the European Union's efforts in this regard.

"In this context, Europe should strengthen its assistance to Ukraine and compensate for some of the support that is going down," Jonson remarked.

Highlighting specific contributions, Jonson mentioned Sweden's investments in the production of 155mm shells, crucial for Ukraine's operations on the front lines. Moreover, Sweden's participation in international initiatives aimed at increasing ammunition production, including through Norwegian-Finnish ammunition manufacturer Nammo, was highlighted.

Jonson's statements come following previous commitments from Sweden to aid Ukraine, including financial assistance and support for initiatives such as the Grain From Ukraine project. Sweden's recent allocation of €30 million towards the Czech initiative for supplying artillery shells further underscores its commitment to assisting Ukraine.

The prospect of supplying Gripen aircraft to Ukraine had previously been met with hesitation from Sweden, citing the necessity of NATO membership. However, Sweden's recent accession to the North Atlantic Alliance has potentially cleared the path for such assistance.

The Swedish government had earlier authorized Ukrainian pilots to undergo training on JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, with opportunities for simulator training and test flights. However, any transfer of Swedish Gripens to Ukraine will require coordination with other countries, akin to the process for supplying F-16s.

In late February, the Swedish parliament expressed support for promptly deciding on the supply of Gripen aircraft to Ukraine, indicating a growing momentum towards tangible assistance.
