Sweden may soon apply for NATO membership

Sweden is expected to apply for NATO membership on May 17, 2022.

The date of submitting the application will depend on whether Finland has time to make a decision on joining by then, Svenska Dagbladet newspaper reported on Sunday via certain sources, TASS reports.

According to Finnish experts, there is a risk that the debate in the Suomi parliament scheduled for Monday [May 16] on the issue of membership in the alliance may be delayed.

The plan highlights the desire of the two Nordic countries to submit documents to Brussels simultaneously.

Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said in an interview with the Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper that Finland could apply to join NATO on May 18.
