Swedish Navy visits Nord Stream area few days before blasts

03 October 2022 12:47

A Swedish Navy ship was in the vicinity of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea a few days before the explosions that led to the gas leak.

On September 22, the ship was at the northern location, where three leaks were later discovered, Gaming Deputy reports.

Dagens Nyheter used a commercial service to track the movement of ships using transmitters that show the location of the ship. The transmitters were later turned off. They started working again when the ship appeared in the southern region, where another gas leak was subsequently discovered.

The Swedish Navy confirmed that the vessel was in the area and was conducting “maritime surveillance”, but declined to comment on the target, citing strict confidentiality. “Our operations at sea are subject to special secrecy due to various events and the global situation. So, we don’t talk too much about what we do,” said Jimmy Adamson, chief of communications for the Navy.

Earlier, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that Germany would form a joint investigation team with Denmark and Sweden to investigate incidents at Nord Stream. In an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Faeser noted that the available evidence supports the version of “acts of sabotage.”

“Germany is working very closely with Denmark and Sweden’ to find out the causes of the incident," he said.
