Swedish PM acknowledges possibility of nuclear weapons deployment in military conflict
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has admitted the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on Swedish territory in the event of a major military conflict.
When asked about the absence of an official ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons on Swedish territory in the bilateral treaty on military cooperation with the United States, he said that Stockholm had developed "two projects", per Aftonbladet.
"We have developed two drafts. They state that Sweden has declared that there are no permanent troops or nuclear weapons on its soil in peacetime," Kristersson said.
He also noted that under war conditions, "it's a different matter."
"In war conditions, the whole of NATO benefits from the nuclear umbrella, which should exist as long as Russia has weapons. However, Sweden is responsible for Swedish territory," he emphasised.
