Switzerland bans Hamas activity for five years
The Swiss Federal Council has approved a bill to ban the radical Palestinian group Hamas for five years, following its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The government assured that the new law will not affect humanitarian aid to Palestinians, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
On September 4, the Swiss government finalized and submitted to parliament a proposal titled “Federal Law Prohibiting Hamas.” The legislation will outlaw not only Hamas itself but also organisations that act as its cover or operate on its behalf.
Authorities in Bern believe that this legal measure will strengthen “Switzerland’s internal security” and promote “the advancement of international law.” “Anyone involved with Hamas or supporting it will face imprisonment for up to 20 years or a financial penalty,” the government stated.
The Federal Council emphasised that the ban on Hamas aligns with Switzerland's international commitments and respects human rights. It also clarified that humanitarian organizations will continue rendering support to vulnerable populations in crisis and conflict zones. The ban is set for five years but could be extended by parliament.
