Greece: Explosion rocks Thessaloniki suburb, two injured Anti-Terror Police Launch Probe
On July 26, a powerful blast struck the Thessaloniki suburb of Sikies, severely damaging an apartment block and injuring two passersby, Greek authorities confirmed.
The explosion shattered windows in surrounding buildings and wrecked several vehicles parked nearby, Caliber.Az reports per Greece media.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the explosion tore through the ground floor of the building, leaving gaping holes in the structure.
Anti-terror police have taken over the investigation, amid mounting concern over possible links to previous violent incidents.
Sources say the head of a prison officers’ union resides in the damaged building, though it remains unclear if he was the intended target.
A young man and woman, both passing by at the time of the blast, suffered injuries from flying glass and debris. Emergency services responded swiftly, and both victims were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The incident echoes a fatal explosion in May outside a Thessaloniki bank, which killed a woman with known ties to armed robbery.
The 38-year-old had been linked to a convicted bank robber accused of terrorism-related offences, including a parcel bomb attack on the Thessaloniki appeals court in February 2024.
