Syrian National Army uncovers extensive tunnel network used by PKK/YPG in Tel Rifaat

The Syrian National Army (SNA) has uncovered a 10-kilometer tunnel network in the northwestern city of Tel Rifaat, previously occupied by the PKK/YPG, a terrorist group linked to the PKK. 

The tunnels were found during a recent search in the Aleppo district, revealing stacked barrels, electrical cables, and rooms equipped with beds behind iron doors, Caliber.Az reports via Anadolu.

The tunnels, which measured approximately 1 meter in width and 2 meters in height, were dug several meters below buildings.

Anadolu Agency captured footage of the tunnels, which had been used for terrorist activities, including hiding, launching attacks, and transporting materials. UAV footage of Tel Rifaat showed widespread disrepair in civilian homes, many of which had fallen into neglect after years of occupation by the terrorist group.

The PKK/YPG, which has long been involved in a violent campaign against Türkiye, is known for constructing similar tunnels across northern Syria, particularly in areas near the Turkish border.

These tunnels often run from residential homes, schools, hospitals, and places of worship, where civilians are used as human shields. Other regions that have seen similar tunnel constructions include Afrin, Manbij, Aynularab, Tel Abyad, Ras al-Ayn, Sirrin, Qamishli, Hasakah, and Malikiyya.

To recall, the SNA recently launched Operation Dawn of Freedom to counter the PKK/YPG’s attempts to establish a terrorist corridor linking Tel Rifaat with northeastern Syria. The operation comes in response to ongoing threats from the terrorist group, which has exploited the instability in the region to further its objectives. 

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths, including civilians of all ages, in its 40-year campaign against Türkiye.

Türkiye has consistently worked with local allies, including the SNA, to thwart the PKK/YPG’s plans and ensure the safety of local populations from the group's oppressive activities.
