On October 30, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa hosted a high-level delegation from the Federal Republic of Germany in Damascus, led by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

The meeting was also attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, Caliber.Az reports, citing Syrian media.

According to a statement published by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on its official Facebook page, the talks focused on bilateral relations between Syria and Germany, exploring ways to enhance cooperation across political, economic, and humanitarian fields. Regional and international developments of mutual interest were also discussed.

The statement emphasised that both sides underlined the importance of diplomatic dialogue and direct communication to support regional stability and strengthen cooperation in the interest of both nations.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Wadephul had announced his visit to Damascus. Speaking in a press statement released by the German Foreign Ministry, he said: “Beyond the dictatorship of Assad, the people of Syria are moving towards a new era. We now want to support them in shaping their country’s future themselves.”

He added, “Syria faces enormous challenges. It needs a government that guarantees all citizens, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, or social background, a life of dignity and security. This is essential to lay the foundations for a free, safe, and stable Syria, and I will emphasise this during my talks there.”

Wadephul also highlighted Germany’s contributions to lifting economic sanctions on Syria, providing humanitarian aid, supporting mine and ordnance clearance, and expanding the German embassy’s activities. He noted the interest of German companies in investing in the Syrian economy.

The German minister stressed that developments in Syria have both direct and indirect impacts on Germany, adding that a stable Syria is in Germany’s strategic interest.
