Media: Syrian president survived three assassination attempts with reported Turkish support Photo
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has reportedly survived three separate assassination attempts over the past seven months, according to Israeli media.
Each of the incidents is said to have been thwarted with critical assistance from Turkish intelligence services, underlining Ankara’s growing influence in post-war Syria, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
President Sharaa, who assumed office following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on 8 December 2024, leads the newly established Free Syria government. In the months since, he has faced sustained threats from both foreign intelligence agencies and armed groups, media reports suggest.
Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported that at least one of the assassination attempts was foiled thanks to direct intervention by Turkish security units.
The paper claims Turkish operatives intervened after detecting suspicious movements outside the Kasr al-Shaab Presidential Palace in Damascus, preventing what could have been a fatal attack. “It was the Turks who saved Sharaa’s life,” the report stated.
Another attempt reportedly took place in Daraa province, near the Jordanian border, during a regional visit by the president. Joint efforts by Syrian and Turkish security teams led to the detection of two suspects along the convoy’s planned route.
Authorities diverted the motorcade, effectively averting the threat. The incident was not disclosed to the public at the time.
The third and reportedly most serious plot involved an ambush planned along a fixed route in Damascus.
Turkish and local intelligence services are said to have identified the threat just in time to dismantle the operation before it could be carried out. Sharaa reportedly left the capital abruptly following the failed attempt.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for the new Syrian administration, stating, “We will not leave Ahmed Sharaa alone in Syria.”
Since the collapse of the Assad regime, Sharaa’s government has consolidated control across much of the country, particularly in the south and around Idlib. Turkish support — both political and humanitarian — is believed to have played a key role in stabilising the emerging administration.
