Tajikistan receives first oil shipments from Iran

Tajikistan has received its first shipments of crude oil and petroleum products from Iran, Interfax reported on Thursday, September 24, citing the country’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.

The volume of the initial deliveries and their commercial terms have not been disclosed.

In August, Tajikistan said it had reached an agreement with Iran on plans to import 2.55 million tonnes of crude oil and petroleum products annually. The proposed volumes include 2 million tonnes of crude oil, 300,000 tonnes of diesel fuel, 150,000 tonnes of gasoline and 100,000 tonnes of aviation fuel.

Transporting such volumes would require around 51,000 railway tank cars. Tajikistan has proposed organising specialised trains and establishing a “green corridor” for fuel transit through Iran.

Tajikistan has also been exploring additional fuel supplies from other countries as it seeks to diversify its sources of imported petroleum products. Earlier this year, Russia accounted for more than 90% of Tajikistan’s fuel imports. In January-June 2026, the country imported 599,500 tonnes of petroleum products, with Russian supplies accounting for 91.1% of the total.
