Taliban intelligence detains two UNAMA human rights staff in Herat

12 August 2026 09:10

Taliban intelligence has reportedly detained two employees of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in the western province of Herat, according to sources cited by Afghanistan International.

The two staff members, who work in UNAMA’s human rights section, were reportedly detained on August 9, as they were leaving the mission’s office in Herat.

Sources said the employees had recently prepared a report on the detention of women in the province and had interviewed several girls who had been detained.

Afghanistan International said it had contacted UNAMA for comment on the reported detentions, but had not received a response.

The Taliban administration has also not publicly commented on the reports.

The circumstances surrounding the reported detention remain unclear.
