Talks about touching frozen Russian assets closed, says German FM
25 February 2026 19:58
Germany’s top diplomat has confirmed that there are currently no talks regarding the use of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine.
Johann Wadephul made the statement during a press conference on February 25 following his meeting with Belgian counterpart Maxime Prevot, Caliber.Az reports.
Wadephul explained that discussions on the liquidation of Russian assets are currently “closed” due to the provision of a substantial reparations loan.
He added that the EU has already begun work on issuing a €90 billion loan, meaning there is no immediate need to tap into Russian funds. However, he acknowledged that the issue could be revisited in the future once talks on damage compensation to Kyiv commence.
