Tehran welcomes Hamas–Israel ceasefire agreement

09 October 2025 19:12

Iran has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, reaffirming its support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.

In a statement released by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran said the Islamic Republic has “always supported any initiative or measure aimed at ending genocide, withdrawing occupation forces, delivering humanitarian aid, releasing Palestinian prisoners, and ensuring the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.”

The ministry stressed that Iran has consistently made every effort and utilised diplomatic channels to back the Palestinian cause, underscoring its long-standing commitment to a just and lasting resolution that secures the Palestinians’ right to determine their own future.

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire and a hostage exchange as part of the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the Gaza conflict. The agreement was signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, and will take effect once ratified by the Israeli cabinet.

Under the deal, hostilities will halt, Israel will partially withdraw from Gaza, and Hamas will release hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. Israeli forces are expected to begin withdrawing within 24 hours, with the release of remaining hostages scheduled for the coming days.

Some Israeli airstrikes were reported in Gaza around the time of signing. The Gaza health ministry reported at least nine Palestinian fatalities over the past 24 hours.
