Tel Aviv embassy staff in Morocco, Egypt evacuated
The Foreign Ministry evacuated the staff of the Israeli embassies in Rahat, Morocco and Cairo, Egypt due to the demonstrations over the situation in Gaza, Yedioth Ahranoth newspaper reports.
The evacuation joins the high alert announced in all Israeli embassies around the world, additional security and the transfer of envoys from sensitive countries to safer countries.
Diplomatic staff is not to leave the houses beyond what is necessary, the message says.
Thousands of students rallied at Egyptian universities on Wednesday to condemn Israeli strikes on Gaza. Protesters in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities chanted “Death to Israel” and “With our souls, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, Al-Aqsa,” referring to a contested Jerusalem holy site. A smaller protest was held near the US Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday.
Despite, Morocco’s normalised ties with Israel in exchange for US recognition of its sovereignty over the long-disputed Western Sahara territory, Prince Moulay Hicham El Alaoui, cousin to the Moroccan monarch, has voiced his support for Palestine on social media.
