Thai foreign minister protests Cambodia’s ceasefire breach to US, China
Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has formally protested Cambodia’s violation of the recent ceasefire agreement, addressing the issue with the ASEAN chair, as well as the United States and China.
The Thai government conveyed its concerns following reports that Cambodian forces continued military operations beyond the agreed ceasefire time, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Maris said a formal letter of protest against Cambodia had been sent to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim—in his capacity as ASEAN chair—and to the United States and Chinese governments as observers.
The breach occurred despite a ceasefire agreement reached during peace talks mediated by Anwar Ibrahim in Malaysia on July 28, which was set to begin at midnight. According to the Thai army, Cambodian troops launched attacks past the stipulated hour, continuing well into the late morning. The Thai military reported that hostilities only subsided after three simultaneous meetings took place at 10 a.m. between the regional army chiefs of both nations.
