Thailand raises Cambodia border conflict at United Nations
Thailand has taken its escalating border conflict with Cambodia to the international stage, as Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa meets with senior United Nations officials and representatives from key countries to seek diplomatic support.
Speaking at a briefing in Bangkok, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikondet Phalangkun confirmed that Sangiemphong is currently in New York and is scheduled to hold talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres later on July 24, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He will also meet representatives from Japan, Russia, and other nations viewed as crucial to Thailand’s diplomatic efforts.
“The Foreign Minister is at the UN headquarters in New York. Today, he will meet with the UN Secretary-General and representatives from countries important to us — such as Japan, Russia, and others — to discuss the ongoing escalation between Thailand and Cambodia,” Phalangkun said.
Fighting erupted on July 24 along the Thai–Cambodian border following a dramatic rise in tensions.
According to Thai officials, Cambodia launched multiple rocket attacks — including with Grad multiple launch rocket systems — some of which struck civilian areas inside Thailand.
In response, the Thai military carried out an airstrike on Cambodian military positions. Both sides have confirmed casualties, including civilians, as artillery exchanges and cross-border fire continued throughout the day.
